Defamatory statement in Parliament not a crime: Supreme Court

The Supreme Court of India has rejected a proposal to classify defamatory slogans against political opponents in Parliament or assemblies as criminal conspiracy. The court stated that defamation on the floor of the House is not a crime. The rejection came during a case involving a JMM MLA accused of accepting bribes for votes. The court upheld immunity, stating that if the act itself is immune, there can be no liability under penal law. The verdict has been reserved.
