28% GST on online games: Industry expresses distress, says will wipe them out

The Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council's decision to impose a 28% GST on online gaming, casinos, and horse racing has been condemned by the gaming industry. The council also confirmed that there should be no differentiation between games of skill and those of chance. Critics of the move have argued that the taxation of the Contest Entry Amount rather than Gross Gaming Revenue is counterintuitive and will make the industry unviable. They also fear the move could send users to illegal gambling platforms and lead to job losses.
